One career in alternative medicine is a chiropractor. The work of a chiropractor is to treat skeletal problems through adjustment of the spine, hips or neck. Unlike dieticians, nutritionists do not require certification to practice. The duties of dieticians and nutritionists are similar. They help patients to improve their health by incorporating healthy foods in their diets. One of the requirements for certification as a dietician is a degree. Since nutritionists do not require certification, a degree is not necessary.

Message therapists are also practitioners in alternative medicine. Massage is a kind of relaxation therapy that is used to treat aching muscles. An associate degree and certification is all one needs to start their career as a massage therapist. Massage therapists have the advantage of being able to work from almost anywhere.

One can also practice acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine. Acupuncture involves poking points on the skin using needles. Puncturing of the skin is believed to unblock channels in the body to cure a person of an illness. You will require a science related bachelor’s degree to start a career in acupuncture. You will then attend a school accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and graduate with a master’s degree.

Finally, you can practice alternative medicine as a homeopath. Homeopaths use ‘The Law of Similars’ for treatment using herbs and other remedies. Herbs that would harm a healthy person are administered to a patient in homeopathy. In the law of Similars, a herb can be used to treat a sick person if the herb can cause problems to a healthy person.
